Red Anna Apple Plant (Grafted)

If you’ve always wanted to grow apples in a warmer climate, the Red Anna Apple plant is your best bet. Most apple trees need freezing winters, but this variety was born in Israel and handles our Indian summers quite well. In my nursery, we only sell Grafted apple plants because they fruit much faster than seeds (sometimes within just 2 years!). It’s a great choice for home gardens in North India or even hilly regions where the winters aren’t extremely harsh.

Health & Garden Benefits

  • Low Chill Requirement: Unlike Himachali apples, Anna apple plants only need 200-300 chill hours, making them perfect for warmer plains.
  • Nutrition Rich: These are packed with Vitamin A, C, and fiber—perfect for a healthy snack straight from the branch.
  • Climate Tough: Once established, the tree is quite hardy and can handle the heat better than most “English” apple varieties.
  • Fresh Harvest: You get apples in late June or early July, which is much earlier than other varieties.
  • Long Life: If you take care of the soil, this tree will give you fruit for 15-20 years (a real family heirloom!).

Red Anna Apple Plant Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Medium-sized fruits that look beautiful with a red blush over greenish-yellow skin.
  • Taste: Very crisp and juicy. It’s mostly sweet but has a nice “tangy” kick that makes it refreshing.
  • Variety: This is a low-chill deciduous variety specifically meant for subtropical areas.
  • Growth: It grows at a medium-to-fast pace, especially if you feed it well during the spring.

How to Plant & Use

If you are planting in the ground, keep a gap of at least 10-12 feet between two trees. For those doing terrace gardening, use a large drum or a 20-inch pot (don’t start in a tiny pot, it will choke!). Pair this with our Dorsett Golden Apple to ensure your tree actually produces fruit. Without a partner tree nearby for cross-pollination, you might just get flowers and no apples.

Growing & Care

I’ve found that the biggest mistake people make is over-watering in the monsoon. While the tree loves sun, it hates “wet feet.” Use well-drained loamy soil. If your soil is heavy clay (like in some parts of Central India), mix in plenty of river sand to help the water drain out.

Nursery Secrets – Detailed Care

  • Sunlight: Give it the full morning sun. In India, the afternoon sun in May can be brutal, so if it’s in a pot, maybe move it to a spot where it gets a little shade after 3 PM.
  • Watering: During summer, water it every day. In winter, the tree goes dormant (it might drop all its leaves, don’t panic!), so cut back watering to once a week.
  • Soil Mix: I recommend a mix of 40% Soil, 30% Sand, and 30% Compost. This keeps the roots “breathing.”
  • Fertilizer: Every February, add a mix of Vermicompost, a handful of Neem Khali (to keep bugs away), and a spoon of Bone Meal for strong roots.
  • Pruning: Cut the tips in early winter. This encourages the tree to grow sideways and creates more “fruiting spurs.”

Pro Tip: Use a bamboo stick to support the main stem when it’s young so it doesn’t lean or break during heavy winds.

Problem — Possible Cause — Solution

  • Leaves turning yellow — Over-watering — Check if the pot hole is blocked.
  • No fruit after flowers — No pollinator — Plant a Dorsett Golden nearby.
  • White powder on leaves — Powdery Mildew — Spray Neem oil mixed with a bit of liquid soap.

As per research from various agricultural universities, the Anna apple remains the gold standard for warm-climate apple farming.
