HRMN-99 Apple: Low-Chill Indian Variety
If you live in a hot city like Delhi, Mumbai, or even in the South, the HRMN-99 Apple plant you’ve been waiting for. Developed by the famous farmer Hariman Sharma, this variety actually grows in the plains where traditional apples would just die from the heat. In my nursery, we only provide Grafted plants because they are tough and start giving fruit much earlier than anything grown from seed. You don’t need a cold mountain anymore to have an apple orchard in your backyard.

HRMN-99 Apple Plant Benefits
- Heat Champion: This is a “revolution” plant because it handles 40-45°C temperatures without breaking a sweat.
- Self-Pollinating: Unlike many others, you don’t strictly need two trees to get fruit, though having a pair always helps the yield.
- Home-Grown Nutrition: These apples are full of fiber and vitamins, and they taste much better when they aren’t coated in wax from the market.
- Early Harvest: You get fruits by June, which is great because you beat the main apple season when prices are usually high.
- Small Space Friendly: It doesn’t become a giant forest tree; you can keep it pruned as a dwarf tree for smaller gardens.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: The skin has beautiful red stripes over a yellow background; the size is usually medium to large.
- Taste: The pulp is soft and juicy with a balanced sweet-tangy flavor (my kids love these straight from the tree!).
- Variety Type: A special low-chill tropical/subtropical variety that doesn’t need much winter cold.
- Growth Speed: It grows quite fast in the first two years, especially if the soil is kept rich.
How to Plant & Use
For ground planting, keep about 10 feet of space so the branches can spread out. If you are a terrace gardener, go for a 20-inch pot or a big cement tank (just make sure it has good drainage holes!). Pair this with our Anna Apple Plant to create a mini orchard and get even more fruit production. I always tell people to use a bamboo stick for support in the first year so the “Loo” (hot summer winds) doesn’t bend the main stem.
Growing & Care
I’ve noticed that HRMN-99 is very forgiving for beginners. The main thing is to keep the soil moist but not like a swamp. In the first few months after planting, don’t keep moving the pot around—let the roots settle into their new home. If you see some leaves dropping in December, don’t worry! It’s just taking a winter nap (dormancy).
Nursery Secrets – Detailed Care
- Sunlight: It needs 6 to 8 hours of direct sun. In very hot states, try to give it the East-facing morning sun which is less “burning” than the 2 PM heat.
- Watering: In summer, you must water daily. In winter, only water when the top two inches of soil feel dry (use your finger to check—if the soil sticks to your skin, it doesn’t need water yet!).
- Soil Mix: Use 50% Garden Soil, 25% River Sand, and 25% Gobar Khad (Cow dung compost) or Vermicompost.
- Fertilizer: During the growing season, give it a mix of Vermicompost, a little Neem Khali, and a spoonful of Bone Meal. For better flowering, a tiny bit of Potash helps a lot.
- Pruning: Every January, prune the extra thin branches. This sends all the “energy” of the plant to the main fruiting branches.
