Golden Dorsett Apple
The Golden Dorsett Apple is a total game-changer for Indian gardeners because it actually loves the sun and warm weather. Unlike those moody hill-station apples, this variety comes from the Bahamas, so it’s used to the heat and doesn’t need a freezing winter to give fruit. In my nursery, we sell high-quality Grafted Golden Dorsett plants, which means you won’t have to wait forever to see an apple—they usually start fruiting in just 2 or 3 years.

Golden Dorsett Apple Plant Benefits
- Tropical Friendly: It’s one of the few apples that stays happy even when the temperature stays warm.
- Nutrient Packed: Home-grown apples have more fiber and vitamins because they don’t sit in cold storage for months.
- Beautiful Look: The tree has nice green leaves and the golden-yellow fruits look really pretty in a backyard.
- Fast Results: Since these are grafted, you get a harvest much faster than a seedling.
- Beginner Friendly: I’ve found that even people new to gardening find this variety quite tough and easy to handle.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Medium-sized fruits with a soft yellow skin and a lovely little pink blush on the side.
- Taste: Very sweet with a tiny bit of tang; the flesh is crisp and super juicy.
- Variety Type: A low-chill deciduous variety (it will drop leaves in winter, don’t worry, it’s not dead!).
- Growth Speed: It grows at a steady pace and stays quite manageable if you prune it right.
- Ripening Time: You get to pick these early, usually around June or July.
How to Plant & Use
If you’re planting in the ground, give it about 10-12 feet of space so it doesn’t fight with other trees. For terrace gardeners, a 15 to 20-inch pot is the way to go (make sure it’s a heavy pot so the wind doesn’t knock it over!).
Pair this with our Anna Apple variety to get the best fruit set. These two are like best friends; they bloom at the same time and help each other make more apples through cross-pollination.
Growing & Care
I always tell my customers that the first year is the most important. You need to keep the plant stable. Use a bamboo stick for support because heavy rains or strong winds can snap a young grafted joint. The soil should be loose—if it’s too hard, the roots won’t spread.
I’ve noticed that these plants do really well when they get plenty of morning sun but are protected from the super-hot “Loo” winds in North India.
Nursery Secrets – Detailed Care
- Sunlight: Place it where it gets 6-8 hours of sunlight. A South-facing spot is usually the best in Indian homes.
- Watering: In summer, you might need to water it every single morning. In winter, just check the soil with your finger—if it feels dry up to the first knuckle, give it a little drink.
- Soil Mix: I use a mix of 50% normal garden soil, 20% sand (for drainage), and 30% organic compost.
- Fertilizer: Every February and September, add a mix of Vermicompost, two spoons of Neem Khali, and a little bit of Bone Meal. For more flowers, you can add a pinch of Potash.
- Pruning: Cut back the very top and any messy branches in January. This keeps the tree short and makes it easier to pluck the apples later!
Uses: Fresh eating, Fruit salads, Juices, Custards, Baking.
