Kasturi Mango Plant

Kasturi Mango Plant is a rare and special mango variety that can grow well in Indian home gardens with proper care. It gives small, dark purple to almost black mangoes with strong sweet smell. In India, where we love mangoes, this one feels like a treasure in the backyard. If you have space in terrace or garden, this plant is something different from regular mango types.

It is not common in big markets. That’s why many collectors and home gardeners like to grow it themselves. And yes, the smell… you will notice it even before cutting the fruit.

After 2–3 years (in grafted plant), you may start seeing flowers. First year flowers? Remove them. Let plant grow strong.

Growing & Care Tips

  • Sunlight: Full sun is a must. Without sunlight, fruiting will be weak.
  • Watering: Water deeply but not daily. Put finger in soil. If top 1–2 inch feels dry, then water. Simple test.
  • Fertilizer: Use cow dung compost every 2–3 months. During flowering, add neem cake and a little bone meal.
  • Support: Use bamboo stick support in early stage. Wind can bend young graft.
  • Pruning: Light pruning after fruiting season. Remove dead branches.
  • Pest Care: Mango hoppers and mealybugs can come. Spray neem oil every 15 days in season.

In Indian climate, especially in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and North India plains, it grows well if protected from heavy frost. In North India, cover young plant in peak winter.

One small nursery secret — during flowering, reduce watering slightly. It helps better fruit setting.

Uses of Kasturi Mango

  • Eat fresh. Best way.
  • Use in mango smoothies and milkshakes.
  • Perfect for desserts and ice cream topping.
  • Can make special mango chutney.
  • Because of strong aroma, some people even use pulp in sweets.

Compared to common mango types listed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), this one is rare and not grown commercially in big orchards.

Growing Secrets

  • Always buy grafted Kasturi Mango Plant. Seed-grown plants may not give same fruit quality.
  • First 2 years, focus on plant growth. Do not rush for fruits.
  • Add one handful wood ash around plant before flowering. Old farmers trick.
  • Be careful with roots while repotting. Mango roots don’t like too much disturbance.
  • In terrace pots, change top 2 inches soil every year. Fresh compost gives better growth.
