Pusa Arunima Mango Plant

Pusa Arunima mango is the perfect choice for Indian home gardeners because it handles our hot summers and heavy rains without much fuss. Since it was developed by IARI (Pusa Institute), it is naturally made for our climate and even fits well in smaller spaces or large pots on your terrace. If you want a tree that looks as good as the fruit tastes, this “red-blushed” beauty is definitely the one for your garden.

Benefits of the Plant

  • Heavy Harvest: This variety is a “regular bearer,” meaning it gives a good amount of fruit every year, not just every other year.
  • Strong & Healthy: It fights off common mango diseases like malformation or powdery mildew much better than old traditional types.
  • Long Shelf Life: The fruits stay fresh for 10-12 days at room temperature (so you don’t have to eat them all in one day!).
  • Great for Pots:Because it doesn’t grow into a giant forest tree quickly, you can manage it in a medium-sized backyard or a large container.

Key Characteristics

The Pusa Arunima mangois a special cross between Amrapali and Sensation. You get the amazing sweetness of Amrapali and the beautiful red color of Sensation. The fruit is medium-sized (about 250g) and looks very premium with its yellow skin and red “cheeks.” The best part? The pulp is bright orange, thick, and has zero fiber (no more mango threads stuck in your teeth!). It ripens late, around early August, just when other mangoes are disappearing from the market.

How to Plant & Use

When you receive your plant, pick a spot that gets the most morning sun. If you are planting in the ground, dig a hole that is double the size of the root ball. For those doing terrace gardening, start with an 18-inch pot and use a mix of garden soil, Vermicompost, and a little bit of sand.

Pair this with our Pusa Mango Plant variety to have fresh fruits throughout the year in your garden.

Side note: Make sure you remove the plastic bag carefully—I’ve seen many people accidentally break the main root while rushing, and the plant gets a big shock!)

Growing & Care

I always tell my customers that mangoes are tough, but they need a little love in the first year. In my nursery, I’ve noticed that Pusa Arunima grows quite fast if you feed it well during the spring.

  • Summer Care: Water daily during the hot months. If the leaves look a bit droopy in the afternoon, it’s thirsty!
  • Monsoon Care: Check that water is not standing around the stem. If you have “heavy rains” in your area, make a small mud mound around the base so water flows away.
  • Pruning: Once a year, after you pick the fruits, cut off the dried or very thin branches to keep the shape nice and bushy.

Nursery Secrets

  1. The Finger Test: Don’t just water because the clock says so. Stick your finger an inch into the soil; if it feels dry, only then give water.
  2. Support is Key: Use a simple bamboo stick to tie your young plant. This helps it grow straight and protects it from breaking during high winds.
  3. The Flower Rule: For the first two years, if you see flowers (manjari), pluck them off! I know it’s hard, but it helps the plant put all its energy into growing strong roots first.
  4. Morning Sun: Always try to keep the plant where it gets the first light of the day. It prevents fungal growth on the leaves.
  5. Natural Fertilizer: Use dried neem cake powder once every three months. It keeps the soil bugs away and makes the plant happy.
